One of the truest signs of success is adaptability. If you can pivot in times of crisis, you’ll be able to adapt to all the changes and ups and downs that life throws your way, and one example of adaptability is Briotech’s custom HOCl product line. HOCl is ideal for cleaning and sanitizing surfaces in offices and schools, but it is also an electrolyzed, antimicrobial, biocide solution that inactivates pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, spores, and fungi, and because of this, HOCl makes for safe wound healing in hospitals, family homes, and even in the far-flung jungles of Myanmar.

Cynthia Varela, Briotech’s co-founder, explains that they’ve “received positive feedback from those who’ve used our BrioHOCl to both nebulize and treat leg wounds on horses, as well as from those who’ve used it to treat hot spots and halitosis on dogs!” But most recently it has helped an Asian elephant named Shwe Thaw to heal a traumatic leg wound to the point that he was finally able to walk again once fitted with a custom prosthesis.

Shwe Thaw required amputation of his rear leg two years ago as the result of a fight with another elephant. Since then, his caretakers had been battling ongoing, non-healing wounds on the impacted area. Due to the infection, Shwe Thaw was unable to walk, requiring him to remain tethered in a designated elephant camp.

“Dr. Moe Zaw, BriotechX’s Chief Medical Officer, along with another associate from our partnership in Asia, were hiking with their children when they came across the elephant camp to find Shwe Thaw tethered in an open barn,” explains Dr. Eric Rasmussen, Briotech’s Chief Medical Officer. “They saw the wound, recognized Briotech might help, and administered the first spray of BrioHOCl.”

“Moving forward in care for Shwe Thaw, our associates arranged to provide the elephant camp with a supply of Briotech product to treat the wound for as long as required and the local caregivers, in turn, agreed to administer a saturation spray of BrioHOCl on a regular schedule. Though our partners appealed to an elephant sanctuary in Thailand for support, recent civil unrest in Myanmar forced the sanctuary veterinarians to decline, so Shwe Thaw’s only treatment was BrioHOCl.”

Despite two years of previously futile efforts to heal the wound, Briotech proved successful. “Regular, daily spraying of BrioHOCl closed the wound in four months,” shares Rasmussen. “Shwe Thaw has now been fitted with his artificial leg, accommodated by our BriotechX partners in Asia. His tethers have been removed and after two years of immobility and chronic pain, he is able to walk again.”

Shwe Thaw’s prosthetic leg is the first of its kind in Myanmar and the camp’s experienced elephant veterinarian fashioned it himself based on YouTube videos of a similar case in Thailand.

“This case, thanks to a somewhat non-traditional use of Briotech’s safe, effective formula makes me think of something we’ve verbalized here at our company since day one, ‘Always happy to help’, and here we get to see that applies to all mammals,” says Varela.

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is naturally produced in the body’s white blood cells as part of our internal defense system that works to fight infection and pathogens, reduce inflammation, and help us heal. Briotech formulations, a pure biomimicry of natural HOCl, have achieved several scientific breakthroughs and are manufactured safely in EPA and FDA-registered facilities.

“HOCl is billed as being 100x more powerful than bleach when it comes to fighting bacteria,” doctors at the Cleveland Clinic explain. “The best part, though? HOCl is nontoxic and handles this hard work while being incredibly mild on your skin. That gentleness is a byproduct of it being naturally produced by your body’s immune system. The buzz surrounding hypochlorous acid (HOCl) grew by leaps and bounds over the past year given its verified power as a disinfectant against COVID-19.”

For wound care use, even in extreme cases like Shwe Thaw, healing isn’t slowed down by discomfort as with some medicines. Instead of alcohol’s sting or peroxide’s unpleasant fizzing, HOCl doesn’t bubble or tingle and won’t aggravate tissue damage at the site.

And with endangered Asian elephants suffering a 50% population decline over the last 75 years and fewer than 40,000 left in the wild according to National Geographic, anything we can do to help these gentle giants is a true blessing.
